Ground-based photograph by Richard Crisp of the Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8 and NGC 6523

The Lagoon Nebula is an active star-forming region located in the constellation Sagittarius, about 1,250 parsecs (4,100 light years) distant in the direction of the Galactic Center. The molecular hydrogen cloud that comprises the nebula extends for about 34 parsecs by 15 parsecs. See also Orion Nebula and Trapezium.
